:: DEALING WITH DISCOMFORT.

Dental pain

Having the brackets attached does not hurt..

However, regardless of the type of brace used, the teeth start to feel sensitive around three hours after they are attached. Over the course of three days, the discomfort will increase, then decrease and finally disappear completely after a week.

You can take paracetamol (e.g. brands such as Doliprane and Efferalgan) to relieve the discomfort during this period, but make sure that you follow the instructions on the pack.

If you are in any doubt, contact us or ask your pharmacist for advice.

Irritation of the lips and cheeks

NOTE: Only applies to cosmetic orthodontics with transparent brackets.

For several days or even weeks, the brackets may irritate the inside of your lips and cheeks.

However, this will go away of its own accord after a few weeks. The mucous membrane gradually gets stronger and becomes more resistant.

Nonetheless, applying orthodontic wax to the brackets that are hurting you can soften them and limit the irritation. You can eat with the wax on as it poses no risk to your health if you ingest it.

Tongue irritation

NOTE: Only applies to lingual orthodontics.

This is a rare problem, but if you do experience it, apply some orthodontic wax to the bracket that is hurting you.

Cheek irritation due to wire displacement

NOTE: Only applies to cosmetic orthodontics with transparent brackets.

In the initial treatment phases, the orthodontic wire can move as it is very fine. It can therefore irritate the inside of your cheeks.

If you are unable to attend the clinic for us to resolve the problem, you can:

  • Take some tweezers and re-centre the wire so that it no longer sticks out to the side.
  • Cut the part of the wire that is sticking out using nail clippers.

Speech changes

NOTE: Only applies to lingual orthodontics and INVISALIGN.

Your speech can be affected for a few days after the brackets are attached, especially if you are tired. In general, the change is not really noticeable and disappears after three days.

Feeling of having swollen lips

NOTE: Only applies to cosmetic orthodontics with transparent brackets.

After the transparent brackets are attached to the outside of your teeth, you may feel that your lips are thicker than before. This sensation disappears after a few days.
